Sri lanka New IGP [Inspector General of Police]


Police Spokesperson Ajith Rohana stated that Mr  C. D.Wickramaratne will assume duties as the 35th Inspector General of Police at the Police Headquarters on Friday (27).

Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana stated that Mr Wickramaratne holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Colombo, IGP Wickramaratne is also an alumnus of  Ananda College in Colombo, an M.Sc. from the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, a Postgraduate Diploma from the University of Bradford and a Diploma from Harvard University.

The New IGP joined the Police Department in 1986 as the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) for 34 years.

IGP Wickramaratne was appointed as the Acting Inspector General of Police on April 28, 2019, following the terrorist attack on Easter Sunday.

IGP Wickramaratne served as the Acting Inspector General of Police for one and a half years before assuming duties as the 35th Inspector General of Police in Sri Lanka.

Several days ago, the Parliamentary Council verified the nomination made by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to appoint Mr Wickramaratne as the new Inspector General of Police

Sri Lanka’s first IGP G.W. R. Appointed Campbell by, the British established the Sri Lanka Police Force on September 3, 1866.

From 1866 to date 34 IGPs have been appointed in Sri Lanka. D. Wickramaratne is the 35th Inspector General of Police.

On June 1, 1947, Sir Richard Aluvihare became the first Sri Lankan to hold the post of Inspector General of Police.
