Dhananjaya De Silva produced a brilliant all-round performance (89 & 3/57) as Galle defeated Dambulla convincingly by 76 runs in their SLC Super Provincial Tournament 2019 game in Dambulla on Saturday.
After being asked to bat first, Dambulla slammed a mammoth 345 for 8 before bundling out Galle for 269.
The Galle openers Sandun Weerakkody and Lahiru Thirimanne got their team off to a stunning start, smashing 65 inside the first powerplay before the former fell after smashing eight fours during his 32-ball 41.
After Weerakkody’s dismissal, Thirimanne and De Silva added 151 runs for the second wicket to lay a perfect platform for Galle. Right-handed De Silva scored 89 off just 76 balls with 11 fours, while Thirimanne made 82 in 96 deliveries with 6 fours and 1 six.
Despite losing a couple of wickets in the middle overs, Milinda Siriwardena and Minod Bhanuka finished off the Galle innings with a flourish. Siriwardena scored at a rapid rate of 147.72 to accumulate 65 off 44 balls with 7 fours and a six. Bhanuka, the wicket-keeper batsman made 44 in 36 deliveries as Galle reached 345 for 8.
In reply, Dambulla top order faltered again as national hopefuls, Niroshan Dickwella, Danushka Gunathilaka, Oshada Fernando failed to impress as they were restricted to 87 for 4 before the 20-over mark.
Former Captain, Angelo Mathews, returning from an injury, found some form with a fine 78 off 84 balls with 7 fours and a six. He shared a 104-run stand with Ashan Priyanjan for the fifth wicket. But, the target was too stiff as Dhananjaya De Silva captured 3 wickets for 57 runs from 9 overs to rattle the middle order of Dambulla.
With this win – their second in as many games, Galle secured their place in the Final, scheduled on 11th April with a game to spare.
